Lighting accounts for over 20% of global electricity consumption. It represents a significant opportunity for energy savings through more efficient lighting designs, yet the fundamental technology has largely been unchanged for the past 100 years. However, with the introduction of reliable, high brightness semiconductor LED chips over the past few years we are now firmly in the midst of a solid-state lighting revolution. With the advantages of significantly improved energy efficiency, longer life spans, smart control systems, better lighting quality, a reduced environmental impact, and a lower cost of ownership the $100B lighting market is going through a sea change.
